Vegan chocolate cherry oatmeal is full of cacao + cherry flavor and has the best thick and fluffy texture! A super healthy and satisfying way to start the day, made with just 4 healthy ingredients.
I’m sure I’ve said this on the blog many times before, but I still think it’s true. Cherries are one of the MOST underrated fruits ever.
Dark, sweet cherries are so so good, especially during the summertime. I think a lot of people mistakenly think they don’t like cherries, because their only experience was with those AWFUL maraschinos as a kid. Or maybe that was just me.
Anyway, during these warmer months I just can’t get enough of the sweet, juicy, dark cherries. Usually I just eat them straight out of the bag, but they’re really great in desserts. And in your morning oatmeal!
So today, we’re making vegan chocolate cherry oatmeal! Super simple but with all the dreamy flavors of the classic, wonderful chocolate + cherry combo.
A few weeks back we talked all about oats (why you should eat them regularly, different types, how to make them), and I shared my absolute favorite method to prepare them, no cooking necessary. That’s what we’re doing today!
Ingredients for vegan chocolate cherry oatmeal
- Rolled oats:Â I always use old-fashioned, whole grain rolled oats because they have the best texture and chew.
- Ground flaxseed: ground flax provides a lot of nutrition, including omega-3s. It helps to give the oats a nice thick texture.
- Hot water: you’ll use hot water to soak the oatmeal, making it a super simple method with no stove/microwave necessary.
- Cacao powder: cacao has lots of antioxidants and gives the oatmeal lots of rich chocolate flavor.
- Dark sweet cherries: the cherries are such a good pair with the chocolate flavor from the cacao. Fresh or frozen works!
Tips for making vegan chocolate cherry oatmeal
- Whatever portion you use for the oats, use an equal amount of hot water. I typically use 3/4 cup of oats, so I soak in 3/4 hot water. However much you like to use, you’ll then heat up an equal amount of water and pour it over the oat + flax mixture, then cover for at least an hour.
- Use fresh or frozen cherries. Either will work, I personally use frozen (just set them out to thaw for a bit before you eat) just because they’re more affordable and last longer, but fresh are great too.
This vegan chocolate cherry oatmeal is a super simple and healthy breakfast, but it tastes amazing! The cacao + cherry flavors go so well together, and the fluffy texture of the oats never disappoints.
I know I’ll be making this as much as possible before summer is over and the perfect sweet cherries are gone!

Vegan Chocolate Cherry Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup whole grain rolled oats
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1 tbsp cacao powder
- 3/4 cup hot water
- Toppings: 1/2 cup fresh or thawed frozen dark sweet cherries
Instructions
- Mix the oats, flax and cacao powder in a bowl. I don't sweeten the oats because the fruit on top is enough sweetness for me, but free to add a bit of sweetener of your choice to the oats (like liquid stevia drops) if you'd like.
- In a microwave safe mug or glass, heat the water in the microwave until it's steaming hot, then carefully remove from the microwave using a towel and pour over the oats.
- Cover the bowl of oats with a plate and let it sit for at least 1 hour.
- When you're ready to eat, mix up the oats and top with cherries.
